You Don’t Have a Hope in the World… Until You Fix Your Artist Marketing Mindset

by David Andrew Wiebe | Dec 7, 2025 | Marketing

Spread the love:

It’s no secret that artists struggle with self-promotion, but…

Most of it has nothing to do with the tactics or techniques of it.

Because before most artists can even bring themselves to think about that…

They kind of need to get their thoughts and feelings about marketing in order.

They won’t publish a blog post or run an ad unless they’re sure that it’s safe, won’t backfire on them, and won’t get them cancelled.

The problem is that, if you share such a vanilla blog post or ad (i.e., “Check out our new music”)…

You don’t have a hope in the world of standing out from the crowd.

It’s Not About TikTok, AI, or Facebook Groups

So, before we even look at the latest TikTok trend or Facebook groups…

We need to get you over this mental hurdle.

To use a technical term, we’re talking about “mindset.”

Mindset is where artists struggle because they think:

Marketing means doing something they don’t want to do.
Marketing means doing uncomfortable things.
Marketing means having conversations they don’t want to have with people they don’t like.
Marketing means doing something fundamentally uncreative.

Yet, artists who gain traction with marketing frequently report:

Waking up excited to post and respond to comments.
Feeling a sense of delight while tackling daily tasks.
Having conversations with awesome people.
Enjoying how they get to apply their creativity to the process.

Yeah, of course, there are good days and bad days…

Good conversations and bad conversations…

Encouraging and discouraging results…

But I find most artists who get over themselves and begin the process of sharing their work and getting exposure for it…

They’re having the time of their lives.

Bridging the Chasm of Disillusionment

So, there’s an obvious gap here.

The gap isn’t just a knowledge gap, although that can certainly be a factor.

It’s also a mindset gap and a motivation gap.

It’s been my experience, though, that taking care of the mindset gap tends to take care of the motivation gap.

When the motivation gap is filled, the learning occurs quickly, making the knowledge gap a walk in the park.

Knock down one domino, and the rest come tumbling down.

So, the only question now is…

How to fill this gap?

I’m glad you asked.

Because this is exactly where The Renegade Musician fits in.

Unlocking Your Inner Renegade

I know people say they don’t like to read…

I know people say they learn in other ways…

And I know people say they can get the information faster through video or audio.

(Or so they think…)

But as much as you might resist it…

Reading is the process.

You’re not going to fill the gap I mentioned by watching a three-minute video.

It’s NOT going to happen.

When I think back on all the personal development work I did just to get to where I am (and I’m not saying I’m anything special)…

It’s frankly insane.

And I’m not even done.

Fortunately, I’m in a position where I can pass on what I’ve learned so far.

I don’t know everything, but MAN some of this stuff was gotten the hard way.

Untold hours…
Untold travel…
Untold sums of money.

The thing is, you’re getting access to ALL that hard-earned knowledge WITHOUT all the pain I had to go through to get it.

This is not some “I read a book once and am now rehashing the same material” guru scheme.

Because, like most artists, I hate being unoriginal.

Even if it means saying the same things differently…

I generally insist on being creative.

I could go on, but I think you get the picture.

The Bargain of the Century (No One Should Ignore)

The Renegade Musician by David Andrew Wiebe

The Renegade Musician is 364 pages of music career goodness you’re just not going to find anywhere else.

You might be able to find some of the pieces in isolation…

But you’re not going to find the dots connected this way elsewhere, certainly not in one, convenient location.

And yet, my book is no more expensive than any other. That’s just CRAZY.

Considering the amount of work that goes into a flippin’ book…

I’ve been paid $400 USD for a single blog post…
$800 for a one-off gig…
$1,680 per week for being a sinecure…

Yet I get like $5 per book in royalties?!

Talk about the bargain of the century.

And people think I get rich off this…

Why shouldn’t I?

I ain’t no sloth if you hadn’t noticed.

I show up to produce, even when it isn’t met with fanfare or millions of views.

This post alone is over 900 words. I wrote it. For YOU.

No JunkGPT for me.

So, if you’re ready to close the gaping hole that sits between you and artistic marketing freedom…
