Van Gogh is sometimes pointed to as an example of an exceptionally talented and skilled artist who didn’t “make it” in a conventional or commercial sense. His art was largely praised and enjoyed posthumously.

But what if Van Gogh was a quirky recluse who didn’t like to be around people and found more joy in his art than in creating connections or building a career? History seems to bear this out.

Even without being an extroverted salesperson, it’s easier than ever for artists to reach a larger viewing audience, and they don’t even necessarily need to be great at their craft to find resonance and popularity.

David is realistic about the fact that we all need an income to cover our living expenses. But touting jobs as the “safe, secure” route is simply untrue. The treadmill most people end up on is going to school, getting a job, getting another job, going back to school, finding a “better job,” and so on. And this generally leaves people in debt, or without much of a retirement plan, more often than not.

Further, most workers now hold 12 jobs in their lifetime. Not only is that a lot of career transitions, it frequently comes with other baggage, like bullying managers, demeaning interview processes, the need to fight for paid time off, and more.

David also touches briefly on the creator economy, which has certainly done some good for creatives, but has also forced people into a position where they must endlessly churn out the “expected” kind of content day after day, week after week, whether it’s try-on haul influencers or Twitch streamers.
