The DM Faceplant: Why Your Cold Pitches Fail

by David Andrew Wiebe | Dec 6, 2025 | Pitching

Spread the love:

“Hey, I noticed you’re around a lot of content that helps men level up.”

Oh, boy. Here we go again… 🙄

“I’ve helped dozens of men in their business and life.”

I suppose you can’t be too mad at someone who can’t figure out how to use the internet.

I mean, if they knew I was hanging around their niche (hint – I’m not)…

Then it seems like they probably could have Googled me before sliding into my DMs and bruising their ego on the way down.

I admit, I’m not Seth Godin (I don’t appear on the first page of Google if you search “David”)…

But I am just a Google search away, all the same.

(Once I figured out the land grab for “David Wiebe” or “Andrew Wiebe” was well underway, I decided to take ownership of “David Andrew Wiebe.”)

I don’t know what YOU find when you search my name…

But when I search for it, it shows that I’m a master musician, award-winning composer, best-selling author, and professional podcaster, among other things (all true, by the way).

Things that don’t exactly scream “This guy needs rescuing.”

And that didn’t take me more than a few seconds.

Stop Bashing Your Head Against the DM Water Slide

Now, I know this could take a really ugly turn.

But this is NOT hustle porn…
Nor is it a humble, or even an overt, brag.

This is about becoming a better communicator.

Because if you do this well, you will have a competitive advantage that few others have.

So, one, you should always know who you’re talking to.

I’ve flogged this horse a lot, so anyone who knows me probably doesn’t need to hear it again.

But here’s an example that I think will land the plane:

If you were an insurance salesperson who got invited into Tony Robbins’ home…

And opened the conversation with, “So, what do you do?”

I think you would be promptly escorted out the door.

As cordial and motivational as Tony is…

He ain’t got time for that.

Now, I’m as guilty as sin.

I’ve made this mistake before, and nearly made it again recently, with someone who’s got 17x the audience I do.

Dodged a bullet there. Barely.

Some people might be a little more forgiving than Tony…

But you can get too close to the sun, Icarus. Be mindful of where you fly.

Two, you can’t judge a book by its cover.

Yeah, I know. First impressions count. They mean a lot.

But if you think you know someone just by looking them up and down…

You could be in for a bitch slap across your soul.

One of the people I learned from was James Schramko, and…

If all you did was look at his YouTube channel, you might assume he’s struggling.

But all it takes is cursory research (i.e., Google his damn name) to figure out that he’s making eight figures as a business coach.

Can you imagine going up to James and saying:

“Bro, let me help you with your YouTube channel.”

I’m getting sick just thinking about it. 🤮

(I mean, unless you’ve got MAD YouTube skills, James could actually benefit from. You’d still want to work on your pitch, though.)

If you can’t see why that’s not the best way to get an “in” with someone who’s got real-world evidence of success…

I’m not sure I can help you.

Flogging the Beaten Horse to a Pulp

What else can I say?

This is similar to the digital sharecropping issue I keep returning to…

No matter how many times I explain it…

And no matter how many ways I approach it…

People don’t get it. 🤷‍♂️

I have a feeling this horse is going to be flogged a lot more before we’re through, and I would love to be much nicer to this horse.

Basically:

Be mindful of the wizards, even if you are one yourself.

There are ways of approaching wizards.

But you’ve got to put that noggin of yours to work.

Turn off the TikTok marathon, and really think.

Yeah, I thought you might be.

P.S. I know some of you say that you don’t like to read…

Well, here’s the thing.

Reading is a success principle.

And that’s one of the reasons you’re repelled by it in the first place.

The media has done a darn good job of keeping you from things that have the potential to change your career for the better.

Reading is one of those things.

And I’ve even seen experts talk as though there are shortcuts when it comes to reading, but…

I’m sorry to say, no AI-generated book summary or action plan is going to give you the same benefit.

You’ve got to put in the work, just like your heroes did.

You get the benefit when you do the work.

So, stop hesitating and start participating. It’s the only way.
