When is the last time you acknowledged yourself for what you’ve accomplished?

We all have to-do lists, schedules and routines, short-term goals, long-term goals, and more. And we engage in a flurry of activity on a daily and weekly basis.

But if getting flat on what you’ve accomplished isn’t part of your system, I would suggest creating it immediately.

This week, I spent some time looking at my milestones for this quarter (I have all of this mapped out in a spreadsheet). And, in a new column, I started writing down everything that was accomplished between September 3 and September 17, as well as from September 17 to October 8.

I was quite amazed at the picture I saw forming. Among other things, between September 3 and October 8, I:

These are significant accomplishments. But I could have stepped over them completely if I didn’t take the time to write them out and become present to all that has already unfolded.

Are you present to the unfolding in your own life? I would encourage you to start tracking what you’ve achieved and to review it often.

Sales has been the theme of the week.

And isn’t there something fundamentally slimy and icky about sales? Doesn’t it make you cringe just thinking about it?

Maybe, maybe not, but the point is we all have an association with sales, and oftentimes it’s negative.

We’ve had that experience of being sold to, or being recruited for a network marketing company, or being roped into a deal that didn’t feel right. For some reason, we always seem to conjure up the worst experiences we’ve ever had first instead of thinking about the dozens of frictionless transactions we make every single week.

To transform our relationship to sales, we need to look at why sales are so important:

  • Without sales, we can’t create a sustainable career or business
  • Without sales, we can’t grow and scale our career or business
  • Without sales, we can’t adequately show our appreciation and gratitude for others, their time, and their contribution to us

I’m all for volunteerism and humanitarian work. Last quarter, my team and I raised about $300 for the education of underprivileged children in South America.

But you also want to know that what you’re doing is of value. You want to be validated. And importantly, you want to continue to provide a service to others that gets better with time.

What can you do in your career or business to ensure a steady stream of sales?

And going beyond that, what small and local businesses could you start supporting? In the strange times we’re in, the giants keep getting bigger, and the small guys keep getting dumped on (if not because of closures, then with taxation).

Let’s sow some seeds and build some goodwill. Start buying from smaller eCommerce or brick and mortar businesses. Support other artists. Show that you care. And if you see someone that could be doing things differently to improve their products and services, offer feedback and contribute to them (that includes me).

We don’t need to make sales about ourselves. We can make it about the people who are going to benefit from doing business with us. We can make it about contributing to others in a meaningful way. You vote with your dollar. Don’t just talk a big game. Act on your values.

You have multiple tasks to do, projects to complete, and opportunities to pursue.

Which one should you prioritize?

As I’ve discovered, this is not an easy question. You need to determine the why behind every action, or your time will be swallowed up by less important tasks.

Talking with others is helpful. Sharing your challenges with a trusted mentor, or other creatives, can help you gain much needed clarity.

But there are two questions that should guide the entire discussion:

  • Where does the greatest opportunity lie?
  • What next action leaves you feeling the most touched, moved, and inspired?

Shiny object syndrome has less of a chance in a scenario where you’re clear on the opportunity, and inspiration is present.

I’ve course corrected in my business many times because of conversations I’ve had with my collaborators, teammates, and partners.

It’s easy to get distracted when what you’re working on doesn’t look like an opportunity, and you aren’t inspired to work on it in the first place.

Additionally, when creating a plan for our eventual success, we must order our steps. When we don’t, we end up jumping ahead to something that can’t be accomplished right now.

I see a studio, record label, magazine, and music venue in my future. But these steps must be ordered. And they work best in the order I’ve listed them off in.

Once I have a studio, setting up a record label is a logical next step. Once I have a record label, I’m going to want to promote our artists. So, a magazine starts to make more sense. Then, the music venue initiative begins to look like more of a feasible opportunity when I have the resources and financial outlay to make it a reality.

There’s a sequence to every version of success you want to create. It takes some intellectual work to identify what that sequence might be. And I won’t lie – sometimes it takes some trial and error, and experience too. But it’s worth putting the work in upfront to identify the most workable sequence.

With that, here’s what I created with you this week.

David Andrew Wiebe: July 2021What are you working on right now?

What are you forcing yourself to work on?

And what do you actually want to be working on?

These are innocuous sounding questions, but as I’ve been discovering, what lies beneath the surface level answers might just surprise you.

This week, I engaged in the creation of multiple videos – some talking head, but mostly guitar shorts / memes.

I also ended up releasing a 15-minute guided meditation (which will be available on all online music stores and streaming platforms on September 24!).

With all the blogging I’ve been doing, and predominantly informational content I’ve been creating, you may have assumed that I’ve been working on exactly what I want to be working on. But the truth is, most of this represents things I’ve been forcing myself to do. And it took some looking for me to understand this.

Do you know how long I’ve been thinking about making meditation audios or guitar videos? Probably years!

So, there’s all this pent-up energy that’s finally starting to burst and find its expression. And it has basically meant thinking differently about daily blogging and content creation in general. Because I realized most projects, I want to be working on fit nicely into this schedule.

If you think you know David Andrew Wiebe, well… you’re really just beginning to see all that he’s about.

I don’t know how long I’ve been bottling up my own expression. But it has been too long.

David Andrew Wiebe, May 2021You don’t need everyone to share your vision. You only need the people who are touched, moved, and inspired by it. And the more specific the vision you’re living into, the better. It makes it easier to identify those who see what’s possible.

All too often, we are surprised to find others aren’t excited about the same things we’re excited about. So, we let that lack of agreement set us back. We begin to question our motives and lose confidence in our direction.

But you don’t need agreement from everyone. You just need agreement from those who share in the vision.

Every day, you are creating your world. And you are creating it with the words you speak. Are you present to what you’re saying?

Pay close attention to the conversations you’re having. Because they always reflect your present circumstances. They are indicative of what you’re creating.

If you want to transform your circumstances, begin having different conversations.
