Like spare change, a lot of people can’t really be bothered with bottles and cans. In case you were unaware, they can be exchanged for small amounts of money at bottle depots.
I don’t think anyone is about to get wealthy from collecting large amounts of bottles and cans, but it can certainly bring in a reasonable amount of cash over and above your present income.
If you find yourself in a pinch and you need to make a business related purchase or cover an unexpected expense, a bottle drive is a relatively easy way to bring in some extra cash. It may seem pretty obvious, but the more money you need, the more cans and bottles you will have to collect.
While you should use some discretion, generally you could go door-to-door in your neighborhood collecting cans. Some people could really care less what you are collecting them for, though it’s always courteous to explain who you are and what your goal is.
For safety reasons and for moral support, it would be a good idea to bring a friend with you on bottle drives. That way, you will also have some extra help.
Additionally, small cars can get packed tight with bags of bottles pretty fast. A wingman (or wing-woman) with another car can make things a little more manageable. You can pack a lot more into SUVs and trucks as well.
There are also other ways of creating a reservoir of merchandise.
I have had some success with collecting from business functions and events. Hotel staff or janitors don’t generally look forward to dealing with bottles and cans, and, they might just wind up in recycling anyway. If so, you might as well make some money off of it.
There are opportunities to collect bottles all around you if you just pay attention. Ideally, you should be able to make it a part of your day, without having to carve a lot of extra time out to do it, so you might as well keep an eye open as you go about your day.
Again, your wealth does not hinge on how well your bottle drives go, but extra money is extra money. When it’s hard to come by, this is a simple way to bring in a little more.
Sometimes, you can’t be too proud of the things you have to do to get by. I know many businesspeople that have had to generate the extra change they needed by bringing a load to the bottle depot. It’s nothing to be ashamed of.
