Single Description:
After a long, nine-and-a-half-year absence since the release of his first solo debut album in 2006, David Andrew Wiebe finally returns with a new single, “Fragments”, a laid-back guitar instrumental, part jazz, part fusion.
True to the title, the music reflects the fragmentation of musical ideas, which span from lounge and jazz to 80s rock guitar and fusion. The relaxed vibe is like that of Wiebe’s own personality and presence, calming and welcoming, but deep and thoughtful.
The theme of the music is not unlike the journey that Wiebe himself has undergone, in various business and musical pursuits, sometimes appearing to be disconnected and divergent, but in the end falling together to create a cohesive whole.
His first album, Shipwrecked… Sentiments was a deliberate attempt at being different, not catering or pandering to any musical sensibilities. The music was free and unimpeded, but raw and sometimes firing off like a science experiment gone a little haywire.
Meanwhile, “Fragments” is a clear departure from the sometimes uncooked music of Shipwrecked… It’s smooth. It flows. It’s structured. It’s polished. Still different, but not so different that it’s alienating.
From his composing to his technical ability as a guitar player and bass player, Wiebe has clearly undergone a transformation, proving that his potential could be refined and developed with time.
